Patience &Sarah was commissioned and developed by American Opera Projects, Inc (Grethe Barrett Holby, Artistic Director & Charles Jarden, Managing Director), a New York City based organization committed to the creation development and presentation of new American opera. AOP presented readings of the opera in progress at its Center for New Opera and Music Theater in November 1994, May 1995, November 1995 and June 1996, consistently to standing room only audiences. AOP took Patience & Sarah on tour to the Massachusetts International Festival of the Arts in Northampton in May 1995, and has presented excerpts from the opera in concerts in New York City, including a one hour program at New York's historic Trinity Church Noontime Concert Series.
Concert presentations of the opera were made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, grants from the ASTRAEA Foundation and "Meet the Composer" and the financial support of the Patience & Sarah Circle of Friends.
American Opera Projects, Inc (founded by Grethe Barrett Holby) is committed to the creation, development and presentation of new American opera and encourages established and emerging composers of all styles to write for this genre. Projects are taken from conception through the initial stages, to then be further developed by AOP and other producing organizations.
